How to Care for Your Hair Extensions

You’ve just had a gorgeous set of extensions done, and you leave the salon feeling a million dollars, only to come unstuck when the hair starts shedding or it starts to feel like straw. Why does this happen to extensions? Usually it’s because you haven’t looked after them properly.

That’s why you need to know how to care for your hair extensions. If you do, they’ll look great and last you much longer.

How long do hair extensions usually last?

Top quality extensions that are really well looked after can last for a year or even longer. Bear in mind though that in general, the more you wash and style your extensions, the shorter their lifespan will be.

How to prevent tangling

Tangling is a common problem especially with super long extensions, and the best way to keep them tangle free is to brush them regularly and gently with a good quality hair extension paddle brush.

How to minimise hair shedding

When extensions are made from human hair, you can expect some light shedding just like there is with natural hair. Washing your hair extensions too frequently can cause shedding, so reduce the need for frequent washing by avoiding the excessive use of products. Your hair extensions will have a lovely sheen anyway, so you shouldn’t need too much product to make them look amazing.

Washing your extensions

If your stylist recommends shampoos, conditioners, and other products for use on your extensions, it’s not because they want to make more money out of you, it’s for a good reason. The right products are formulated for extensions and they’ll keep them looking nourished and healthy. Generally steer clear of products that contain sulphates, parabens, alcohol as these can dry the hair out.

Use a deep conditioning treatment

Hair extensions don’t get any natural oils from the scalp so they need to be kept well moisturised. Apply a deep conditioning treatment once per week to keep your extensions soft and healthy.

Colouring hair extensions

I always tell my clients that I don’t recommend colouring their hair extensions as they are processed beforehand.

Have regular maintenance

It’s a good idea to book in for maintenance appointments to keep your extensions looking fab. They’re an investment, so looking after them is well worth it.

By following these tips and making sure you ask your stylist all the questions you want to ask about aftercare, you’ll get to enjoy your glamorous, thicker, and healthier locks for longer.
